The recruitment lot is what it sounds like - a blend of several farmers with the sole intention of getting the younger generation interested in coffee farming. Unblended is the company behind this project, and I will let their own words speak for them:
"The Recruitment Lot program aims to identify and attract young coffee producers interested in turning their farms into successful businesses in the specialty coffee market.
We invest heavily in helping young producers build brands that are recognized by the end consumer, not just roasters.
And our entire portfolio is designed to support producers to experiment and innovate risk-free so they can present their ideas to the world."
The impact behind this coffee is incredible and embodies everything Unblended wants to achieve.
This coffee stood out from the samples I requested in that it was sweet, well bodied and from a cost perspective, a perfect launching point for me as an amateur roaster. Learn more about the Recruitment Lot at Unblended.
I have several goals that I want to achieve with this coffee and with Andres Martinez's coffee. The two big ones are (1) get comfortable in discovering my roast style with the tools available to me (not much) and (2) understand what it means to own a small business.
Full transparency, juggling a full-time job, marriage, a 1-year-old and starting a life in a new continent, feels ambitious. But it feels right. So, I'm taking my time, and going at the pace that fits me and my family best. And that is what it’s always been for me: having fun with what I do and being able to pass it on to the next generation. Which, given this coffee, is not too far from what Unblended is doing.
So, I hope you enjoy drinking it as much as I had finding it, roasting it and serving it to you :)
